Oral Surgery
Treating Dental Health Conditions
Oral surgery encompasses a number of surgical procedures that are conducted on the oral cavity. The mouth, teeth, jaws, and associated tissues may all be treated with oral surgery procedures.
At Sussex Dental Clinic, our approach to dental treatment can be described as 'less is more'. In other words, we aim for a conservative approach first, and consider more involved or complex treatments only when we deem it absolutely necessary – that is, when the more minimally invasive treatments cannot effectively solve a given dental problem.
We'll always try preventive approach first; better to prevent the problem from developing completely rather than treating it once it already exists! If prevention doesn't work, we'll look at how we might repair and preserve the tooth with conservative treatment options. Only once we've explored and exhausted all other options will we consider surgery.
At our clinic, tooth extractions and (often subsequently) dental implants are the most common types of dental surgeries we perform. Learn more about them below.
Dental Implants
A dental implant is a small titanium screw that functions like a natural tooth root. Our dentists place dental implants as part of the process to replace a missing tooth and assist in restoring your smile. A dental implant, together with a tooth replacement such as a crown or bridge, looks and feels much like a natural tooth.
Tooth Extractions
A dental extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the alveolar bone. We perform extractions for a variety of reasons, but in essence, we'll extract any tooth that is beyond the point of repair as a result of tooth decay, periodontal disease, or dental trauma.
Wisdom Tooth Removal
Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars that erupt in the back corners of a normal adult mouth. If your wisdom teeth are causing problems for your oral hygiene or dental health, your dentist may recommend removing them.
